South: Sulcis
Portoscuso stands just in front of Sant’Antioco and San Pietro islands. The first one is connected to Sardinia by a bridge and its coasts are punctuated by gorgeous bays: Maladroxia, Coequaddus, Cala Sapone, Sottotorre, Spiaggia Grande. The other “island in the island”, San Pietro, can be reached by ferry in only 40 minutes from Portoscuso and has just one village: Carloforte, a colourful maze of narrow alleys where the language and traditions of the ancient Tabarkini are still preserved. The west side of the island is a sequence of stunning beaches: Guidi, la Bobba, le Colonne, Lu Caise, la Caletta. You can explore the hidden coves from Cala Vinagra to Capo Sandalo with a boat trip.
Going southwards along the coast, you reach Punta Trettu and Porto Botte, ideal spots for kitesurfers, the little beach Portu de Su Trigu and the white dunes of Porto Pino. Moving beyond, towards Teulada, a coastal scenic route leads to the beaches of Tuarredda and Portu Tramatzu. Following the road of Carignano, ancient local wine, you can drive along an archeological and enogastronomic itinerary that delves in the rural inland of Sulcis. You can start from Carbonia, model of fascist architecture where the big mine of Serbariu stands, and reach the necropolis of Villaperuccio, the medieval village of Tratalias and the nuragic site of Sant’Anna Arresi. In Santadi, the Wine Cooperative of Sulcis, the evocative tomb of Barrancu Mannu is surrounded by a luxuriant valley: hectares of woods, springs, streams and paths that shape the Pantaleo forest.
